BIG SIGH. Such wrestlings. I am looking this up BECAUSE I believe there was someone around my back door last night at 11pm. The sherriff also thinks there was. I used to have a gun, and wrestled with being my own protector vs. trusting God for protection and His soveringty. I am a widow and I have a 2 and 4 yr old who I very much feel responsible to protect. I know that things will only get worse and I have in my mind said I would be martyred. It's so hard in the context of kids. So NOW I'm struggling with whether or not I should have the gun in the house...Lord give peace, protection and mostly WISDOM!

Thanks for writing this!

Hey, Heather:

Thanks for the comment. It may be helpful for you to go back to the beginning of the series and read your way all the way through. I was building off of other concepts as each article unfolded, so unfortunately, if you started with last one you missed our treatment of Jesus overturning the tables.

If you don't feel like reading the whole series maybe just reference this post: http://nickloyd.com/2009/05/26/did-jesus-contradict-himself/

Thanks again for lending your voice to the discussion.

What about Jesus in the temple, physically casting out the money changers?

John 2:14-16 (New International Version)"14In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. 15So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16To those who sold doves he said, "Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father's house into a market!" "

This does not sound a totally non-violent Jesus to me. You can love your enemies & pray for those who persecute you, while still having a righteous anger that they are harming innocents. Jesus was motivated by righteous anger. He ACTED. He made a WHIP and drove PEOPLE AND ANIMALS out with that whip. At least that's what it sounds like to me. His gentleness was not his only quality.

I admire this alternative God blesses us with in our possible darkest hour. To love someone so broken in such a sin-indulged act of hatred is proof in itself of Gods "scandlous grace". Though I agree absolutely, honestly I have no idea what I would do filled with fear, dread, and adrenaline.

I hope and pray the Holy Spirit would give me words and actions in such a situation. It's difficult to even think about allowing someone to fatally injure me, but when it comes to my children -- I think most mothers would do anything to protect their kids. In theory I would pray over an attacker in the Spirit and cast out the enemy, and we would all sit down to a nice cup of coffee together. In practice, I'm not sure what I would do, but all is possible with Jesus.
